“YOU CAN CHECK OUT ANY TIME YOU LIKE BUT YOU CAN NEVER LEAVE” - the Eagles
AN ASYLUM in decay. A pig-faced bellhop dreams a grand hotel into existence as a dynasty collapses in a sickly, dreamlike Southern California. A world filled with trash, a porous reality of madness and revenge, grime and glamor. This is ORESTES 2.0.
This design was selected in the category of “shortlisted emerging designer” at World Stage Design 2022.

theoretical set design by Miranda Friel
exploring the dark carnival of human desire inside the shiniest of capitalist machines: a Las Vegas casino. John Wilkes Booth, Lee Harvey Oswald, Squeaky Fromme, Leon Czolgosz, Sara Jane Moore, Charles Guiteau, Giuseppe Zangara, John Hinckley Jr. and Samuel Byck, mingle, carouse, complain and make an impassioned case for their place in the game of history, egged on by the Proprietor and the Balladeer.
The set was designed to function as a cross between a shooting gallery and a slot machine, with a pop-up mechanism affected by a lever on stage right, controlled by the Proprietor and larger-than-life presidential heads that popped up when it was their turn to be shot or interacted with.
